I have mostly used canola oil for cooking. A couple of years ago, I was using Olive oil to cook for about 6 months. at that time, everyone was saying that Olive oil is healthier etc, so I switched.
Now I am back to using Canola Oil. I read in readers digest that Canola Oil is used in Mediterranean cuisine and it seems after some survey they found that people from that region had fewer hear attacks.
I also use it to deep fry.
I use it mainly because it does not have a taste to it.
My mom used to use Sunflower oil. That also did no have a specific taste to it.

In India, my Mother in law, (Mrs Meena Ganesan) uses Gingelly Oil,
My aunt (Mrs. Sugantha Gurumoorthy) uses Sunflower Oil, to cook.
Here I have not seen Sunflower Oil in the markets. But I have come across Vegetable Oil.
Other Than Canola Oil, I use
Olive Oil if I make Pasta or Salads and use
Gingelly Oil, to mix with rice with some Podi, with Idli Milagai podi, to make Vathakuzhambu, etc.

My mother uses Saffola back in India. I used canola oil but I had some kind of allergy mostly while deep frying so started using vegetable oil.I do not have much choice here. Sunflower oil is sometimes available at the Indian stores. I also use Idhayan oil for Podis and pacahdis.
Again the debate about cooking oils! Back in India, we use Canola, Sunflower, Coconut and Sesame oil. Here I only use Olive oil... since I found that it was beneficial healthwise... now they again are back to Canola oil! Phew... I am tired...
that's nice info. about cooking oil Vandana! I use corn oil for deep frying and olive oil for regular cooking.
I use sunflower oil (you can find it at regular grocery stores here too...just ask ur grocer-the only con is its expensive). Before tht i used canola oil.

here in US it simply says vegetable oil. I use sunflower oil. but recently I bougt canola oil.
In India my mom used saffola oil for cooking, but here in US, i never found this oil. so i started using Peanut oil. I use olive oil, while i bake somethg in oven.
In India we used sunflower oil but here in US olive oil for cooking, for deep frying I use corn oil!

I use olive oil for cooking and canola for deep frying. Have no idea what my mom uses as i dont enter the kitchen when i go to my mom's place :)
